China's U.S. Treasury holdings fall sharply

china us treasuries

China pulled back on its holdings of U.S. Treasuries in December.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Call it the Chinese taper.

China's holdings of U.S. Treasuries fell by $47.8 billion in December, the biggest one-month drop in two years, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Treasury. China remains the biggest foreign holder of U.S. Treasuries. The decline in its purchases comes at the same time that the Federal Reserve is pulling back on its own purchases of government debt, a withdrawal of stimulus popularly known as tapering.

But other foreign countries are stepping into the breach, pushing the volume of Treasuries held outside the U.S. to a record high. Belgium actually posted an increase in holdings greater than China's decline, while Hong Kong, Ireland, Norway, South Korea and the Netherlands all significantly boosted their holdings as well.

China is clearly trying to diversify its holdings of foreign government debt, and it will likely make fewer purchases of U.S. Treasuries going forward, Nick Stamenkovic, fixed income strategist at RIA Capital Markets in Edinburgh.

"If the U.S. can't rely on China to be the biggest holder, it might mean than yields have to rise," he said. He expects the yields on the benchmark 10-year Treasury, now at 2.71%, to rise nearly 1 percentage point by the end of the year due to the pullback in purchases by both the Fed and China.

But Stamenkovic said he doesn't see China dumping large quantities of Treasuries on the market. He said there will probably still be months ahead when China's holdings of Treasuries increase once again.

Hot Safest Companies To Own In Right Now

"I'd be very surprised if this is a long-term trend," he said, "but! the size of the move [in December] certainly caught the markets off guard." To top of page

Top 5 Trucking Stocks To Buy For 2014

Although rail stocks have come a bit off their highs, particularly the eastern operators, Wall Street still remains pretty bullish on the prospects of rail continuing to take share from trucking. With that, an in-line quarter for CSX (NYSE:CSX) isn't likely to change the story much in either direction. Improvements in the coal business next year, a continued housing recovery, and ongoing growth in the intermodal business should all lead to better volume and operating profits, but the stock's valuation indicates that Wall Street is already counting on that happening.

Second Quarter Results Come In On Target
While there were some line by line deviations relative to estimates, CSX came in basically as expected for the second quarter, which will likely give investors a bit more confidence about the upcoming earnings from other railroads like Norfolk Southern (NYSE:NSC), Union Pacific (NYSE:UNP), and Kansas City Southern (NYSE: KSU).

There are few things in life I know with certainty... But I know this: Barring the end of the world, the price of oil is going to fall and the price of natural gas is going to rise. In my mind, you ought to buy all the natural gas you can afford because these energy resources will not be cheap forever.

There were other signs that natural gas was at a very significant low. First and foremost, Wall Street had gone from being massively long natural gas in 2005 and 2006 to being almost uniformly short. Trading volume on natural gas futures had soared – up 31% in a year, with almost all the financial firms being short.    But the most important factor in my analysis was that from a physical, arbitrage perspective, natural gas couldn't get any cheaper. Natural gas is just one form of energy. In theory, as an energy source, it's totally interchangeable with other fossil fuels. Think of it this way: A barrel of oil has 5.825 million British thermal units (Btu) of energy. One thousand cubic feet of gas contains just a little more than 1 million Btu of energy.   Thus, on an energy-equivalent basis, you might expect natural gas to trade for one-sixth the price of oil. That doesn't actually happen very often, though... In the real world, oil has vastly more utility. It's far more widely used in transportation, and it's much easier to transport. (It doesn't have to be frozen first, like natural gas does.)   So in the real world, historically, oil has carried a 10x premium in price to natural gas on an energy equivalent basis. But last April... the price of oil was trading at over a 50x multiple to the price of natural gas. This enormous premium simply couldn't last – it was impossible.    That's why I was telling you to be a pig in natural gas. First, I had studied the investment carefully for a long period of time.   Second, I knew that Wall Str

Another element to consider as well is a sustained period where the Suez Canal is shut down. If this were the case, it could be a temporary boost for tanker fleets. LNG carriers likeTeekay LNG Partners (NYSE: TGP  ) , the third-largest liquefied natural gas fleet, would be well positioned to benefit from the increased ship times. Day rates for LNG carriers are about $100,000 per day, and the extra eight to 15 days of shipping time could be a nice pad to revenue.

  • [By Value Investor]

In terms of valuation the company is trading at an attractive price and investors can consider this as a good investment point. GasLog Partners has the lowest EV/EBITDA and EV/Revenue compared to peers such as Golar LNG (GLNG) and Teekay LNG Partners (TGP). A low EV/EBITDA and EV/Revenue suggests undervaluation of the company and hence a good value investment.

Goldman̢۪s Q3 Sales Fall 20%, Profits Flat

Goldman Sachs (GS) said Thursday that its third-quarter net income was $1.52 billion, or $2.88 a share, vs. $1.51 billion, or $2.85, a year ago. These results beat estimates, but net revenue fell far short of expectations.

Sales dropped 20% year over year to $6.72 billion. Goldman's investment bank, for instance, reported a 44% drop in revenue from bond, currency and commodities trading.

The bank, led by Lloyd Blankfein, cut costs by 25% to $4.56 billion in the third quarter, and compensation expenses declined by 35%.

“Ongoing uncertainty around the economic outlook and the traditional seasonal slowdown drove a significant reduction in client activity during the quarter," said CFO Harvey M. Schwartz, in a call with analysts early Thursday.

“This reduction in nationwide client activity obviously impacted the opportunity set in many of our businesses," Schwartz said. In investment banking, equity and equity-related volumes declined 27% quarter over quarter. Debt [unintelligible] volumes declined 10% versus the prior quarter, and completed M&A volumes declined 36% sequentially.”

In its institutional business, net revenues from fixed client execution were $1.2 billion in the third quarter, he says, “substantially lower than the second quarter.”

Investment management fees topped $1 billion but were 1% lower than they were in the prior quarter. Assets under supervision grew by $36 billion to $991 billion. “Net market appreciation of $19 billion was primarily in equity assets, while $17 billion in inflows were concentrated in fixed income assets,” Schwartz said.

Top 5 Gas Utility Companies To Watch In Right Now

This just in: The Russell 1000 Growth Index just hit an all-time high of 925.98. Now this isn’t just another all-time high, the way we’ve been getting them in the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which have hit multiple highs this year. This is a big deal.

Getty Images

The reason: The previous high in the Russell 1000 Growth Index was back in March 2000–right at the peak of the dot-com bubble. That means it’s taken nearly 14-and-a-half years for the index to finally scale those heights.

The Russell 1000 growth index is chock full of big tech companies like Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Verizon Communications (VZ) and Google (GOOG).The big difference now is that these types of stocks actually make oodles of money and trade at (more) reasonable valuations.

Those stocks are also big components in the Nasdaq 100 and Nasdaq Composite indexes–just about the only major U.S. indexes that have yet to hit their all-time highs.

International Consolidated Airlines Group SA (IAG) and Air France-KLM (AF) Group rose with as a gauge of travel stocks as oil prices fell after Iran accord. PSA Peugeot Citroen gained 3.7 percent after people familiar with the matter said its chief executive officer plans to step down next year. Fresenius Medical Care AG surged the most in five years after U.S. regulators scrapped a plan to cut Medicare payments next year.

Air France led airlines lower, falling 4 percent to 7.30 euros. International Consolidated Airlines Group SA (IAG) lost 1.9 percent to 270.7 pence while Deutsche Lufthansa AG slid 2.1 percent to 15.75 euros.

  • [By Michael Blair]

IAMGOLD (IAG) is one of my favorite gold stocks principally because it is a relatively high cost producer with long lived mines. That paradox arises since high cost producers have the most volatility when gold prices change. If they are operating close to break even, a relatively small rise in gold prices makes them quite profitable. Conversely, when prices fall they bleed all over the floor.

On an adjusted basis, Eldorado Gold (EGO) has the longest reserve/resource life amongst our coverage companies (39 years) with Goldcorp (GG) having the longest reserve/resource life (23 years) amongst the senior producers versus the group average of 22 years. Kinross Gold (KGC) and Iamgold (IAG) have the shortest adjusted reserve/resource lives amongst the senior and mid-tier producers (18 and 14 years respectively). On a percentage basis, the companies most affected by the adjustment are New Gold (NGD) and Iamgold which both saw reserve/resource lives fall by 47% however, we note that despite the adjustment,New Gold still has the second longest reserve/resource life in our group (37 years). Newmont Mining was the least affected by the adjustments with reserve/resource life declining by only 12% to 22 years from 25 years.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Patricio Kehoe] some future and gave several reasons for my bearish stance towards the stock. A small market, high geopolitical risk in some of the countries the firm operates, along with overexpansion in times of fluctuating gold prices gave tune to the massive shedding of shares by investment gurus. Five months have past since I last considered Golden Star potential, and everything indicates the situation has not changed.

Guru Activity Shows a Clear Tendency

Steven Cohen (Trades, Portfolio), Chuck Royce (Trades, Portfolio) and Arnold Schneider (Trades, Portfolio), had already sold their entire holdings in the company by October 2013, indicating they had little faith in the gold miner recovery. By the end of the year, Jim Simons' (Trades, Portfolio) Renaissance Technologies took a similar decision, reducing its stake in the firm by 32%. This tendency towards the sale of Golden Star stock was duly noted by investors and analysts alike, and concurs with the company poor performance.

    A Look at the Numbers

In an industry plagued by fluctuating metal prices, operating with lofty margins can be quite helpful. Yet Golden Star cannot afford such luxuries. With an operating margin of 0.1% and a net margin of -56.8% the firm is in a tight spot, especially when compared to the industry average. Unlike its industry peersmedian, which are of 2.26% and -0.09%, respectively, the Toronto-based gold miner is struggling to generate decent cash flow levels. Further metrics depict a even worse situation for shareholders: return on equity is currently at -370% and revenue growth is estimated to reach a poor 2.5%. Purchasing overpriced assets, relative to current gold prices, is surely one of the reasons for such grim figures, as financial losses have taken their toll on Golden Star.

The announcement of its 2013 full year, and fourth quarter earnings only helped to add to shareholdersconcerns. A 15% decline in revenue was expected by those

I listen to investing advice from self-made billionaire investors, and I try to ignore advice from everyone else. I suspect readers on this website will appreciate this, where thankfully the Focus is still Gurus. To this end, I bring you the instructive story of Pershing Gold Corp (PGLC) and Levon Resources (TSE: LVN) (LVNVF).

Hot Gold Companies To Invest In 2014: Goldcorp Incorporated(GG)

Goldcorp Inc. engages in the acquisition, exploration, development, and operation of precious metal properties in Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Central and South America. It produces and sells gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc. The company was founded in 1954 and is headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Doug Ehrman]

The bigger question that Friday's events raise is whether precious-metals companies are becoming cheap or dangerous at current levels. Barrick is down about 40% this year, and while others such as Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) and Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM  ) are down less, they have still slid by roughly 20% each. Gold as a commodity is down more than 17% this year, as represented by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) . In addition, global macroeconomic events are aligning to make the future direction of precious metals very uncertain, at the very least increasing the volatility and risk associated with these types of investments.

  • [By Hebba Investments]

Therefore the situation is still very bullish for investors in physical gold and the gold ETFs (GLD, CEF, and PHYS). Investors interested in leveraging this situation into higher potential profits may also consider buying gold miners such as Randgold (GOLD), Goldcorp (GG), Yamana Gold (AUY), and any of the other gold miners. Finally, those willing to shoulder much larger risks may consider some of the exploration and micro-cap companies that offer significant profits at a high risk such as Chesapeake Gold (CHPGF.PK), Pretium Resources (PVG), Western Copper (WRN), or any other of the junior exploration companies. Though investors should keep in mind that gold mining companies and explorers do not always rise with a rising gold price - do your research before you invest in the miners.

10 Best Income Stocks To Buy For 2014

Fear and worry about China's economy and financial system appears to be taking its toll on China's leading insurers, and MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, thinks that's why it's important to look for a financial company in China that's firing on all cylinders.

Ping An Insurance Group ((PNGAY) in New York and (HK:2318) in Hong Kong) kicked off earnings reporting season for China big insurance companies yesterday. Ping An, China second largest insurer, reported a 40.3% gain in net income for 2013.

That 40% gain in net income is likely to be among the lower increases reported by China insurance companies in the next few weeks. The average growth in net income among insurers expected by analysts is 92%. I think that makes it worthwhile holding the best of these insurersuch as Ping An and China Life (LFC), a member of my Jubak Picks portfolio, for these earnings reports, even though the systemic stressnd thus riskn China financial system is rising.

When judging a company's prospects, how quickly it turns cash outflows into cash inflows can be just as important as how much profit it's booking in the accounting fantasy world we call "earnings." This is one of the first metrics I check when I'm hunting for the market's best stocks. Today, we'll see how it applies to Franklin Electric (Nasdaq: FELE  ) .

  • [By Seth Jayson]

Margins matter. The more Franklin Electric (Nasdaq: FELE  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Franklin Electric's competitive position could be.

10 Best Income Stocks To Buy For 2014: Retail Opportunity Investments Corp.(ROIC)

As of December 31, 2011, its portfolio consisted of 30 owned retail properties totaling approximately 3.2 million square feet of gross leasable area. Return on Invested Capital (ROIC):

Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) combines the best in both worlds by measuring the return on all capital invested in the firm (both debt and equity). Does the company show a consistently high return on total capital (above 12%)?

  • [By David Trainer]

Over the past few years, SWK has demonstrated little ability to grow NOPAT organically. Instead, the company has relied on big acquisitions to fuel growth. This strategy is unsustainable because the company cannot indefinitely pump more capital into the business while getting back proportionally less cash flow (NOPAT). That strategy leads to declining ROICs, which is what the company is doing now. Figure 1 contrasts SWK's rising NOPAT with its declining return on invested capital (ROIC). Investors should focus on the bottom line, which is ROIC, not the top line revenues or earnings because those metrics ignore the amount of invested capital used to generate them.

Health care will be necessary until we find a cure for everything. There is a less than infinitesimal chance of us finding a cure for everything in the next several decades. The following companies are Dividend Aristocrats whose revenue is generated primarily in the health care sector:

HCP, Inc. (HCP) AbbVie (ABBV) Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) Abbott Laboratories (ABT) Walgreen (WAG) Medtronic (MDT) Becton Dickinson (BDX) Cardinal Health (CAH) C.R. Bard (BCR)

Not to be outdone by the food and beverage industry (or perhaps due to negative health effects from the food and beverage industry), the health care industry counts nine Dividend Aristocrats in its ranks. They operate in more diverse lines of business than the food companies. HCP is a REIT that focuses on health care properties. C.R. Bard, Medtronic, and Becton Dickinson manufacture and distribute health care devices and supplies. Abbott Laboratories and Johnson & Johnson (and to a lesser extent, Cardinal Health) are well-diversified health care businesses. AbbVie was recently spun-off from Abbott Laboratories (notice the vaguely similar names), and is a pharmaceutical company.

What: Shares of Rigel Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: RIGL  ) , a clinical-stage small molecule drug company focused on inflammatory and autoimmune disorders, dropped as much as 21% after the company resumed full responsibility for its rheumatoid arthritis pill, Fostamatinib, and reported topline data from two late-stage studies involving the drug.

  • [By Sean Williams]

It wasn't nearly as exciting a week for Rigel Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: RIGL  ) , which regained full rights to rheumatoid arthritis pill Fostamatinib from AstraZenecaon Tuesday. The pair actually reported a statistically significant ACR20 response rate at 24 weeks in two trials, but the data isn't expected to be conclusive enough to gain FDA approval. AstraZeneca, not wanting to spend any more on the program, took a $140 million charge and returned all licensing back to Rigel. With the prospect of high trial costs and a drug which did well, but perhaps not well enough to compete with competition already on the market, Rigel is now in a tough position and is worth avoiding at all costs.
