Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonathan Yates]

For those looking to invest in real estate stocks, highly recommended is the Dr. Housing Bubble blog. In a recent posting, the "Dr." pointed out that there was a "Lost Generation" when it came to household income. That has not happened for those investing in staffing industry stocks such as Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX), Robert Half International (NYSE: RHI), TrueBlue, Inc. (NYSE: TBI), and Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC).

  • [By idahansen]

The entire demand labor industry should do well as the US Department of Labor just reported that 169,000 more jobs were added to the American economy. The more work there is, the more demand there is for the services of staffing solutions firms such as Labor SMART, Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX), TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI), and Robert Half International (NYSE: RHI).

  • [By Jonathan Yates]

Even though the stock market rallied on Federa! l Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's remarks with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DIA) and Standard & Poor's 500 Index (NYSE: SPY) surging, the long term winners will be stocks in the staffing industry such as Paychex(NASDAQ: PAYX), TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI), Robert Half (NYSE: RHI), and Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC).

Top 5 Healthcare Technology Companies For 2014

A surprising number of IT professionals say they have to clean up corporate devices infected by executives who went to porn sites.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Want to stop nasty worms from spreading on corporate networks? It would help if bosses stopped going to porn sites.

According to a recent survey by software firm ThreatTrack Security, 40% of tech support employees admit they've had to clean an executive's corporate device after the boss visited an infected porn website.

The survey, conducted in October, shows that while it's generally gotten easier for companies to defend themselves from outside attacks, bosses' bad habits make it difficult to keep up. Here are some other mistakes executives make:

56% got malware from clicking on a bad link or getting duped by a fake "phishing" email. 47% attached an infected device, like a thumb drive or smartphone, to their PC. 45% got a virus when they let a family member use a company computer. 33% installed a malicious app on their company device.

  • [By Vanina Egea]

A few companies excel over their market peers, granting them an unconventional competitive advantage. Everybody knows the market leaders, or the mammoth companies, but there are other particular services that can give a firm greater exposure. No other example is more relevant than the rotary rig count offered by Baker Hughes (BIH). The Baker Hughes Rig Counts provides a weekly count of U.S. and Canadian drilling activity to the industry since 1944, and has become an important business barometer for the drilling industry and its suppliers. Most importantly, the index allows industry analysts to identify industry trends, while providing valuable information to prospect investors beyond Baker Hughes itself. After experiencing a decline in performance from mid-2011 to the end of 2012, the company saw great improvement in overall performance during 2013. Can the trend be expected to continue?

The third-ranked stock based on our screen methodology was Borg Warner (BWA), a company that had already made an appearance in the 2-for-1 portfolio, back in 2004-06.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

The automotive industry has fared well this past year, turning out the best sales numbers in a decade, as consumers replace a fleet that's older on average than ever before. That brisk sales pace has been a big tailwind for parts suppliers such as BorgWarner (BWA). Even if you're not familiar with the BorgWarner name, there's a good chance that your car is on the road today because of this $13 billion tier-1 parts supplier -- the firm makes engine and drivetrain components like turbochargers, timing belts, and transmissions for a huge group of automakers.

BorgWarner boasts a big customer list that includes the likes of Volkswagen, Ford, Daimler, and GM. The emphasis on increased efficiency without sacrificing performance has been a boost for BWA -- it's one of the reasons why the market for turbochargers has grown at brisk rates, and it's helped user in the adoption of diesel cars here in the U.S. Like any tier-1 auto supplier, BorgWarner benefits by locked-in customers; since automakers rely on BWA to produce specific parts for specific vehicles, switching costs are extremely high if Ford or Volkswagen decide to switch suppliers. And OEMs aren't likely to switch in the first place, since BWA's enormous scale means that it can produce quality parts more cheaply than most.

From a financial standpoint, BorgWarner is in solid shape, with a $1.4 billion cash and investment balance more than offsetting the firm's $1.2 billion debt load. The parts business is capital intense, but BWA has been a great capital allocator, keeping balance sheet leverage at zero. Look for a possible upside catalyst at BWA's next earnings call this coming month.

5 Things Manchester United's Management Wants You to Know

Manchester United (NYSE: MANU  ) shares have dropped since the organization reported an expected revenue decrease in the first quarter from missing out on the Champions League this year. It always pays to check in on what management teams have to say following a quarterly earnings report, and Manchester United is no exception -- so let's examine five interesting nuggets this team offered during its most recent call.

News for January: "Low probability" of transfers

After spending roughly 150 million pounds in the transfer market this past summer, the team looked strong -- except that the defense still needed another strong center back. The situation has since worsened with the injuries to Marcus Rojo, Rafael, Phil Jones, and Jonny Evans, while Chris Smalling has looked unconvincing. Chairman Edward Woodward spoke on the upcoming transfer market, especially as it relates to strengthening that defensive squad:

We're not looking to enter the market for short-term fixes; however, we have targets that we are looking at for next summer. Should any of those become available in January, which is obviously rare, we will consider acting. But I think in terms of expectation setting, we will need to recognize that's a low probability.

Strong youth development

The one positive to come out of United's defensive injury struggles is the chance for academy players to step up. Tyler Blackett, Paddy McNair, and Tom Thorpe only have a combined 11 appearances so far this season, but that number is likely to increase, as the team will need their defensive talent. While the Manchester United Academy doesn't have the same cachet as Barcelona's La Masia, it has produced a number of strong players. Chairman Woodward noted:

Youth development is a key part of the club's DNA, and we continue to invest in our academy and scouting infrastructure to attract the most talented young players. According to CIES Football Observatory, Manchester United's academy has produced more footballers currently playing in Europe's top five leagues than any other club in the U.K., with a total of 36 players, over 60% more than the U.K.'s second club. This is a clear indication that our efforts have paid off.

Biggest global audience in the Premier League

Manchester United earns some of the highest sponsorship revenues in the league, based on the team's success and global audience. Woodward offered a stat that shows just how popular the team is in comparison with the rest of the Premier League clubs:

Manchester United commands more than 51% of the Premier League's entire global TV audience, which is watched in over 200 countries worldwide.

To put the audience size in perspective, 82 million people watched Manchester United's top match last season. For comparison, the most watched sports program in the U.S. is Sunday Night Football, which averages 21.7 million viewers.

Top 10 Railroad Stocks To Buy For 2015

Rising value of sports content

The value of sports content is high and rising, as live events and sports programming remain some of the few things that people want to watch live. The value of contracts to broadcast the Premier League and Champions League are on the rise, and that value is expected to rise further after the current deals lapse in 2016 and 2018. From Woodward:

Recent announcements demonstrate the value of content continues to rise. Last month alone, three new broadcasting deals were announced around the world: First of all, the Bundesliga four-year deal with 21st Century Fox is up 61%; the ITC deal with Star India and Star Middle East is up 150% versus the previous deal; and NBA, an eight-year deal with ESPN and TNT is up an incredible 187%.

Huge opportunity in the United States

Soccer has been growing in popularity on U.S. TV, and that could mean big things for the Premier League. It will also mean big things for the teams that get the biggest fan base, which can lead to better sponsorship deals, such as the record-sized seven-year kit deal Manchester United signed with General Motors' (NYSE: GM  ) Chevy brand. More from Woodward:

People are sometimes surprised when we say that the U.S. is the biggest emerging market when it relates to football. Let me give you some interesting stats from NBC this season. The opening weekend set streaming records, with over 8.9 million minutes watched, which is up 56% from the same weekend last year. This ranks as NBC Sports Networks' most-watched Premier League weekend, with unique visitors up 42% from last year.

Also, the game between Manchester United and Chelsea on Oct. 26 set an NBC record for the most viewed Premier League match across NBC Sports since a broadcaster began televising the Premier League. So as we've stated before, the value of content is rising, sports is the must-have content, and football is the No. 1 sport.

As long as Manchester United can resume its winning ways, the club's off-field financial performance should reward shareholders for years to come.

Your cable company is scared, but you can get rich
Manchester United and live sports are one of the few things keeping your cable company in business. You know cable's going away. But do you know how to profit? There's $2.2 trillion out there to be had. Currently, cable grabs a big piece of it. That won't last. And when cable falters, three companies are poised to benefit. Click here for their names. Hint: They're not Netflix, Google, and Apple.

Top 5 Food Stocks To Buy Right Now

While Canada’s central bank grapples with the conundrum of persistent disinflation, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) must now contend with the opposite problem: a surprise rise in inflation.

This week, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that inflation, as measured by the consumer price index (CPI), climbed 0.8 percent sequentially during the fourth quarter, while the core CPI, which strips out volatile components such as food and energy, increased by 0.9 percent. According to data aggregated by Bloomberg, economists had expected the aforementioned numbers to rise by 0.4 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively.

On a year-over-year basis, the CPI rose 2.7 percent, while the core CPI rose 2.6 percent, with both figures showing that in the short term at least, inflation is trending toward the higher end of the RBA’s targeted annual range for inflation of 2 percent to 3 percent.

Elsewhere, Hillshire Brands (NYSE: HSH  ) jumped 5% as Tyson Foods (NYSE: TSN  ) appears to have won its bidding war with Pilgrim's Pridefor the parent of Jimmy Dean sausages, as Pilgrim's Pride withdrew its proposal following Tyson's latest offer. The nation's No. 1 poultry producer said it will pay $7.7 billion for Hillshire, or $63 a share. Hillshire has not formally accepted the bid, but the acquisition seems inevitable given that Tyson is the only remaining suitor. Notably, Tyson shares fell 6.5%, a sign that investors believe the poultry-maker is overpaying for the parent of Ball Park franks. Hillshire shares, meanwhile, have gained nearly 70% since offering to buy Pinnacle Foods, which sparked the bidding war between Pilgrim's and Tyson to acquire it.

    1. Avg. High Yield Price
    2. 20-Year DCF Price
    3. Avg. P/E Price
    4. Graham Number

SYY is trading at a premium to all four valuations above. The stock is trading at a 37.5% premium to its calculated fair value of $26.26. SYY did not earn any Stars in this section.

The NPV MMA Diff. of the $282 is below the $500 target I look for in a stock that has increased dividends as long as SYY has. If SYY grows its dividend at 3.6% per year, it will take 3 years to equal a MMA yielding an estimated 20-year average rate of 3.41%. 10 Best Paper Stocks To Watch For 2014: Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund(CFP)

Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund is a closed-ended equity fund of fund launched and managed by Cornerstone Advisors, Inc. The fund invests funds investing in the public equity markets of the United States. It invests in stocks of companies operating across diversified sectors. Cornerstone Progressive Return Fund was formed on April 26, 2007 and is domiciled in the United States.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But you can see in several places the consequences of the stampede toward high yield. Here are just a few:

Closed-end funds Cornerstone Progressive (NYSEMKT: CFP  ) and Pimco High Income (NYSE: PHK  ) both make fixed payments back to fund shareholders on a monthly basis, and their distribution yields are truly extraordinary, at about 17% and 12%, respectively. Those dividends have enticed shareholders to pay $1.30 to $1.40 or more for each $1 of assets in the funds. Yet during most months, a substantial portion of those distribution payments has simply been a return of investor capital rather than true income from the funds' investments. A recent study discussed in The Wall Street Journal found that returns on a portfolio with a combined value and dividend-income strategy outperformed a strategy focused more exclusively on maximizing dividends by an average of 1.7 percentage points per year, a huge edge in long-run returns. In the dividend ETF arena, most funds tend to focus on maximizing yield. Although the popular Vanguard Dividend Appreciation (NYSEMKT: VIG  ) ETF bucks the trend by screening first for consistent dividend growth and only then looking at yield as a factor, many rival ETFs start with high-yielding stocks as their baseline and only then consider other desirable traits. Others focus solely on high-dividend niches of the market, such as iShares FTSE NAREIT Mortgage-Plus (NYSEMKT: REM  ) and its concentration on high-yield mortgage REITs.

When dividend stocks get too popular, their prices get out of line with both their dividend income and the fundamentals of the businesses that underlie those stocks. In simpler terms, when dividend stocks become bad values, it's time to consider looking elsewhere for a margin of safety.

Weyerhaeuser Company has been elected to be taxed as a real estate investment trust. The company was founded in 1900 and is headquartered in Federal Way, Washington.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

This quarter, though, pricing trends haven't been as favorable, with lumber prices losing as much as 25% of their value before bouncing back somewhat. Moreover, Plum Creek has faced more of a competitive threat from rival Weyerhaeuser (NYSE: WY  ) , which bought up 645,000 acres of prime Pacific Northwest timberland from Brookfield Asset Management and its Brookfield Infrastructure Partners affiliate last month. The buy gives Weyerhaeuser more assets with easy access to export markets across the Pacific Ocean in Asia, although the Pacific Northwest does have closer proximity to areas destroyed by the mountain pine beetle.

In December 2012, the Company purchased Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited. oklyn Power Corporation. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Saibus Research]

Consolidation has been incremental in the paper and forest products industry. In May 2012, Resolute Forest Products (RFP) (formerly AbitibiBowater) announced that it had acquired 50.1% of Fibrek and acquired the remaining 49.9% in August. 2011 saw International Paper (IP) announce a hostile takeover of Temple-Inland and after offering $32/share in cash as well as the assumption of $600M of TIN's debt, IP was able to close the deal in February 2012. 2011 also saw Rock-Tenn (RKT) acquire Smurfit-Stone to create the number two player in the linerboard segment with 20% market share, trailing only International Paper's 40%. We see these moves as a prudent step to consolidation in the industry as certain types of paper such as newsprint and uncoated free sheet (office paper) are seeing falling demand due to increased use of digital resources.

Top Stocks To Buy Right Now

The prospects of solar power have been growing day by day, so some are wondering when the technology -- and the industry -- will truly come into their own. According to Dr. Ernest Moniz, the new Department of Energy secretary, that time frame is "underestimated," meaning that it should come sooner than many expect. There are several indicators that are pointing to that, as well. As several Chinese solar companies are hitting the wall because of a panel-supply glut, some of the weaker companies are on their way out. This is clearing the way for the stronger candidates to get pricing on panels again. First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) recently announced that it could not take orders for new panels until after the third quarter, because all panels to be built until then are contracted out.

There's another aspect of the solar industry that's taking root: distributed power. Companies likeSolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) are showing that it is indeed possible to make money in the residential solar business, something that has been a struggle in the past. Tune into the video conversation below between Fool analysts Joel South, Taylor Muckerman, and Fool.com contributor Tyler Crowe as they discuss some of the other emerging trends in the solar industry.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Fluidigm (Nasdaq: FLDM  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Fluidigm doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, pretty well. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 24.0%, and inventory increased 14.4%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks decent. Revenue expanded 32.8%, and inventory increased 14.4%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks worrisome. Revenue dropped 7.2%, and inventory grew 2.8%.

Last year, Blackberry investors were not quite pleased with the collapse of a $4.7 billion buyout by Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. (FFH) because the management had clearly highlighted the vulnerable cash position of the company and an uncontrollable rate of cash burn that reduced the time available to the company to bounce back. However, in retrospect, the decision made by FairFax to abandon the deal and instead fund the company with $1 billion in convertible bonds along with the appointment of a new management team proved to be beneficial for the struggling giant. In a bid to create superior products and innovate on the existing products, the current management has sparked reasonable hope among investors of a possible comeback.

The board of Montreal-based Mega Brands unanimously approved the transaction, and investors holding 39 percent of the stock, including Chief Executive Officer Marc Bertrand and Fairfax Financial Holdings (FFH), agreed to the deal. The purchase of Mega Brands, the world's second-largest maker of snap-together blocks, will fill a product hole for Mattel.
