LONDON -- Stock index futures as of 6:35 a.m. EDT indicate that the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) may open up 0.78% this morning, while the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) may open 0.82% higher. After closing at 28 on Friday, CNN's Fear & Greed Index has fallen back to 25, or "extreme fear," suggesting that investors expect further volatility this week.

Among the top performers in Europe this morning was telecommunications firm Telefonica, which rose by 3.1% following reports that the Spanish government had blocked a 70 billion euro takeover offer for the company by AT&T.

Today's U.S. economic calendar is extremely light and is unlikely to distract investors from this week's main highlight: Wednesday's monthly meeting of the Federal Open Market Committee, after which investors hope the FOMC will provide some clarity on its stimulus policy for the remainder of the year. Economic reports in the cards for today include the Empire State Survey, which is due at 8:30 a.m. EDT and is expected to record a rise to 0.9 in June, up from -1.4 in May. The Empire State Survey measures manufacturing activity in the New York area. Next, at 10 a.m. EDT, the Home Builders' Index for June is expected to have risen to 45, up marginally from 44 in May.

Oi (OIBR) provides integrated telecommunication services for residential customers, companies and governmental agencies in Brazil. This stock closed up 2.5% to 85 cents per share in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $0.82-$0.86

    52-Week Range: $0.76-$2.34

    Thursday's Volume: 22.83 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 14.72 million

From a technical perspective, OIBR jumped modestly higher here right above some near-term support at 80 cents per share with heavy upside volume. This stock has been downtrending badly for the last five months, with shares sliding lower from its high of $1.97 to its recent 52-week low of 76 cents per share. During that downtrend, shares of OBIR have been making mostly lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of OIBR now look ready to rebound and potentially trigger a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if OIBR manages to take out Thursday's intraday high of 86 cents to more near-term overhead resistance at 90 cents per share with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in OIBR as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at 80 cents to 76 cents per share and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 14.72 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then OIBR will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $1.02 to $1.08 a share. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give OIBR a chance to tag its 50-day moving average of $1.18 to more resistance at $1.27.

  • [By Mike Arnold]

I normally don't look at charts much, but comparing Orange to its competitors in the French telecommunications market is quite fascinating. As one can see, incumbents Bouygues (BOUYF.PK) and Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) (owner of SFR) saw similar price declines. The market, on the other hand, rapidly bid up the price of new entrant Iliad SA (ILIAF.PK), as a result of forecasts for Iliad to capture significant mobile market share (which it did, around 10%). The wide divergence in price relative to changes in underlying value favor going long the incumbents, including Orange. Because this time it's different.

For example, Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) Wireless charges a $350 early termination fee for smartphones (which declines $10 per month satisfied). Theoretically, a consumer could buy a subsidized iPhone for $200, immediately cancel service, and pay the fee for a total device cost of $550. That's less than the $650 retail price that Apple charges, as well as the $580 total required to pay off a T-Mobile iPhone. Interestingly enough, Verizon launched its own installment plans shortly after T-Mobile.

It’s always exciting when a stock quadruples in value, as Intercept Pharmaceuticals (ICPT) has this year. But are investors too excited? FBR’s Andrew Berens and Thomas Smith think they are:

    Steve Remich

We are initiating coverage of Intercept Pharmaceuticals, Inc. with an Underperform rating and a 12-month price target of $172 per share. We believe investors are much too optimistic about the accessibility of the nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) market and the regulatory pathway to commercialization. We agree that NASH is a highly prevalent disease globally but see this potential market as facing significant challenges before it can be accessed. We think payors are unlikely to embrace intervention for NASH, especially given the anticipated hepatitis C (HCV) burden on the system. NASH would be competing with HCV for payor dollars and provider access, as both diseases are treated by hepatologists.

Furthermore, unlike HCV, which is cured after one course of treatment, NASH is likely to require chronic therapy. NASH is also a relatively unrecognized disease with no treatment paradigms, necessitating building the market. Despite compelling efficacy, we do not think the FDA is likely to approve obeticholic acid (OCA) without an adequate safety database, making an accelerated approval unlikely in the time frame expected by investors. The co-morbidities in this patient population are too significant, and the lipid changes with OCA are concerning, especially in light of the reported cardiovascular events disclosed in the top-line FLINT data release.

Shares of Intercept Pharmaceuticals have dropped 3.2% to $286.78 at 2:40 p.m. today.

Sure Intercept Pharmaceuticals (ICPT) might feel like the only biotech stock that matters today, but there are others. For instance, Incyte (INCY) and BioMarin (BMRN) are on the move after Barclays changed its ratings on the pair.

    REUTERS

But before getting into that, let’s talk about Barclays’ Ying Huang and team’s thoughts on the sector. Would you believe they echo those of Goldman Sachs in its downgrade of the sector earlier this week (and just about everyone else) by calling this a stock picker’s market?

    Huang explains:

Biotech should continue to outperform in 2014, but may be a more stock-specific year: We believe biotech as a group will continue to outperform the broad market in 2014 but do not expect a repeat of 2013. In 2013, the Nasdaq Biotech Index outperformed the S&P 500 by a large margin (+65.6% vs. S&P +29.6%), driven by a combination of generalist investor interest, hunt for growth opportunities, healthy long-term outlook for the industry, and an accommodative FDA. While we expect trends to remain strong in the overall industry and for biotech to outperform the broader market in 2014, it will likely be more muted, with fewer meaningful catalysts and as investors favor larger companies with less downside risk.

Huang too falls back on the PEG ratio–Price/Earnings to Growth–while explaining away the sectors P/E of 31.4, which dwarfs the 18 P/E in U.S. pharmaceuticals. “Looking at PEG ratios, which we view as a more appropriate metric given the growth profile of biotech companies, the group has traded at a reasonable and stable 1.0x for the past decade,” Huang says.

As for Incyte and BioMarin, Huang explains why he’s bullish on the former, bearish on the latter:

After taking a closer look at [Incyte's] pipeline assets, we are increasingly bullish on its proprietary JAK1 inhibitor INCB39110 and its IDO inhibitor INCB024360 and have increased ou

Those of us who are members of this long-suffering, uncomplaining, self-sacrificing class may get some soggy French toast in bed, (don't worry, kids; mom will clean up the kitchen), a chance to read in peace, or perhaps time to indulge in a long, hot bath. Bringing Home the Bacon If you really want to pay back mom for all she's done, get ready to pony up big. A card and some carnations (the official flower of Mother's Day, who knew?) just won't cut it. The cost of replacing mom as nurturer, nurse, cleaner and cook -- according to Insure.com's 2014 Mother's Day salary index -- would run you $62,985 a year, up from $59,862 in 2013. Breaking down the price of having someone else handle her various duties: Cooking and cleaning, $12,230 Child care, $21,736 Homework help, $7,290 Chauffeur, $5,672 Shopping, yard work, party and activity planning, finances, etc., $15,019 And my personal favorite, finding out what the kids are up to (paid in the equivalent value of a private detective), $1,036. These numbers are all up from last year's survey. Cooking It Up in a Pan Mom helps to pay for other things, too. In 2012, there were 10.3 million single U.S. mothers with children under 18, and one-third of women who gave birth in 2012 were single moms. In terms of growth, Asia is where the company is achieving its greatest success. Operating joint ventures in China, India and Japan, Aegon’s gross deposits in new markets grew 31% in fiscal 2013 to $19.8 billion. Its underlying earnings before tax have grown 28% over the last two fiscal years, with fee-based earnings representing a much bigger part of its business than in the past. That a good thing, because fee-based earnings don have nearly the same bite if things go south than assets on your own balance sheet. Its operations outside of Europe are getting stronger, providing the diversification necessary to survive financial hiccups. As far as insurers go, AEG is one of the best cheap stocks worth owning.

Cheap Stocks to Buy: Cencosud S.A. (CNCO)

Cencosud is one of the largest retailers in Latin America. It operates grocery stores, home improvement stores and department stores in five countries including Chile, its home base. Its stock is down 51% over the past year for several reasons, including a deal falling through that would have seen it sell 51% of its credit card operations in Chile and Argentina to Itau Unibanco (ITUB) and using the proceeds to reduce its heavy debt load. Add to that a major devaluation of the peso in Argentina, where it generates a quarter of its overall revenue, and you have investors in a full-on panic.

Consider: According to YRC, the $150.9 million it currently pays in annual interest exceeds the $92.6 million in interest obligations paid by "all [of its] competitors combined." Con-Way (NYSE: CNW  ) , for example, sports a debt load about half of YRC's, yet pays only about one-third as much in interest on that debt. Old Dominion Freight (NASDAQ: ODFL  ) has 12% the debt of YRC, but only 7% of the interest expense.

Shares of Heartland Express have gained 50% this year, trumping the 38% rise in Con-Way (CNW) and the 29% advance in J.B. Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) but lagging Old Dominion Freight Lines (ODFL) and Swift Transportation (SWFT).

Wunderlich’s Nicholas Bender thinks FedEx’s results bode well for Old Dominion (ODFL), Con-way (CNW) and Saia (SAIA):

We expect all less-than-truckload carriers to benefit in 2Q14 from the same trends that carried FedEx Freight to a banner 4Q14. This includes Hold-rated Old Dominion, which will continue to grow at well above market rates, and Buy-rated Con-way, which we believe can leverage a strong 2Q14 to prime the pump on margin enhancement efforts. Our favorite name in the space remains Saia (SAIA-$42.92, Buy), which will once again see accelerating tonnage growth in 2Q14. Though tonnage growth will moderate in 2H14 due to steeper comps, there remains considerable potential for the company to boost yield and continue winning incremental business with new accounts.

(JP:6971) (KYOCF) off 1.9%, and Fujitsu Ltd. (JP:6702) (FJTSY) losing 2.3%. News that China would lift a ban on some sales of videogame consoles had sent shares of Nintendo Co. (JP:7974) (NTDOF) shooting 11% higher on Wednesday, but apparent profit-taking sent the stock down 4.2% in early Thursday action. Shares of rival Sony Corp. (JP:6758) (SNE) , however, followed with a 4% rise, also possibly buoyed by a Nikkei Asian Review report that it was planning a "smartphone offensive" in the U.S. and China. Canon Inc. (JP:7751) (CAJ) fell 2% on a separate Nikkei report that the company's 2013 operating profit would miss forecasts. Toshiba Corp. (JP:6502) (TOSYY)

What about apparel companies and retailers? Morgan Stanley likes companies that target brands that are most popular with “lower-income consumers,” who they deem as most likely to put the money they save into new purchases. Analysts like The Children Place (PLCE), Foot Locker (FL), Finish Line (FINL), Brown Shoe (BWS), and Skullcandy (SKUL). The same applies for retailers including Aeropostale (ARO) Burlington Stores (BURL) and Ross Stores (ROST).
