Hot Electric Utility Stocks To Buy For 2014

LONDON -- It's seemingly been a good start to 2013 for funeral services provider Dignity (LSE: DTY  ) , which saw an 11% increase in revenue to just shy of 68 million pounds. This in turn led to a 16% rise in operating profit to 25 million pounds.

This reason for this recent surge is being attributed to the number of deaths being approximately 7% higher than the same period in 2012. It is, however, anticipated that the number of deaths will normalize over the course of the year.

In terms of company growth, the last quarter also saw Dignity complete the acquisition of Yew Holdings, which will add a further 40 funeral locations and two crematoria to its roster. Aside from this, the group also added one further funeral location and seven satellite locations.

CEO Mike McCollum commented:

This is a good performance by the Group with the first quarter being ahead of our expectations. The integration of Yew Holdings is progressing well and the initial performance is encouraging. All three divisions of the business are performing strongly.

The Department of Defense awarded nine contracts worth a combined $239.5 million Monday. Among public companies, a few of the bigger winners included:

General Electric (NYSE: GE  ) won a $45.2 million award exercising an option on a previously awarded contract. GE will supply the U.S. Navy with seven F414-GE-400 spare engines and multiple engine components for its F/A-18E/F fighter jets. This contract should be complete by November 2015. Booz Allen Hamilton (NYSE: BAH  ) is a winner in a $30.9 million award under an indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ), cost-plus-fixed-fee, multiple-award contract "for support of emerging navigation technologies for air and shipboard command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance system applications."The DoD's contract announcement said a second, unnamed contractor has won a similar award, and both awardees will now have to compete for individual task orders the Navy may put up for bid over the next three years. Additionally, this contract may be extended by a two-year option period -- potentially raising the value of the contract to $52.7 million, and potentially extending the contract out to May 5, 2016. B/E Aerospace (NASDAQ: BEAV  ) was awarded an unrelated maximum $6.6 million contract. B/E will supply various engine parts, avionics, wheels, and brakes to the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force, as needed through May 5, 2017.

Alliant also benefits from a narrow economic moat. Having long-term contracts with its customers, that generate consistent revenue for years, is a great advantage. The long-term programs have high switching costs for the customer. For example, ATK produced the composite materials for the Hellfire missile for years.

In addition, leading the solid rocket propellant market should ensure increased annual revenue. The new Space Launch System (SLS), for which ATK is working with the NASA, is expected be as successful as the Space Shuttle program years ago.

Most important, Alliant is the biggest supplier of small-caliber ammunition for the U.S. military. Furthermore, ATK has managed to get new contracts in the U.S. military sector, such as the second full-rate production of the advanced anti-radiation guided missiles. This contract with the U.S. Navy was signed for a total of $102.4 million.

New Contracts and acquisitions should increase profitability

Alliant has developed a composite technology that brought in new customers such as Airbus Group NV (EADSY) and Boeing Co (BA). In addition, the company's composite material is required for the production of the F-35 jets. ATK produces around $1.8 million of the content in every F-35 jet that is constructed and generates $1.2 million worth of every A350.

New acquisitions create great expectations for shareholders, and this is the case of Alliant. The acquisition of Bushnell Group Holding Inc., that was completed in November of 2013, will amplify the customer base of Alliant麓s Sporting Group even further, and is projected to increase earnings for the company.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By David Smith]

    Chilling out
As the U.S., with its vast new gas finds, moves toward liquefied natural gas production and export, anyone with a modicum of interest in energy knows about Cheniere Energy's (NYSEMKT: LNG  ) current construction of an LNG processing facility at Sabine Pass in southwestern Louisiana. But a couple of other approaches to liquefaction are about to make a big difference in LNG processing.

  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Still, there are a few advantages the U.S. has in the race to capture LNG market share. We are the only country that is producing shale gas in commercial amounts, and a few companies have already started construction on export terminals.Cheniere Energy (NYSEMKT: LNG  ) will become the first LNG exporter approved to ship to countries that aren't members of a free trade agreement. With contracts for its first two LNG trains locked in for the next 20 years,Cheniere is primed for solid gainsonce the initial LNG trains start chugging in the first half of 2015. Be sure toread all the details in this premium research report.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

Right now, though, the debate is purely economic. That's one reason onlyCheniere Energy (NYSEMKT: LNG  ) has been permitted to export natural gas to non-Free Trade Agreement countries. The company recently noted that its first two export trains are ahead of schedule, meaning it should begin exporting by second half of 2015. So while Cheniere will be first to market, there are a number of companies with projects in the pipeline that want to join Cheniere, including, of course, ExxonMobil.

Advisors' Opinion:

US Energy (USEG), an independent energy company, focuses on the acquisition and development of oil and gas producing properties in the continental U.S. This stock closed up 6.9% to $3.53 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $3.29-$3.53

    52-Week Range: $1.45-$4.06

    Thursday's Volume: 116,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 219,710

From a technical perspective, USEG bounced sharply higher here right off some near-term support at $3.27 and back above its 50-day moving average of $3.45 with lighter-than-average volume. This stock recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern at $3.32, $3.21 and $3.27. Since finding buying interest at those levels, shares of USEG are now spiking higher and moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if USEG manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.65 to $3.80 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in USEG as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $3.27 or at $3.21 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 219,710 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then USEG will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 52-week high at $4.06. Any high-volume move above that level will then give USEG a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.60 to $5.
